Saturday, March 13, 2010Tutorial: Sketched Text in Photoshop
This tutorial will lead you through 12 steps to create a nice sketched text effect in photoshop. It's pretty simple... and you end up with something like this..
Step 1
Create a new document. Use the Type tool to write the text you want to use - a good solid typeface is required for this to really work, we're using Arial Black (it's fat).

Step 2
Next create a new layer, fill it with black and then use the Filter > Noise > Add Noise filter to add noise over the top of it (I used about 170% noise with a Gaussian uniformity)

Step 3
Next, apply the Filter > Blur > Motion Blur Filter to the same layer.. change the angle to match the angle you want for the pencil strokes... i used 23 degrees and a distance of 10 - again, you can play with these.

Step 4
Now for the tricky part. Select the layer that has your text to create a selection from that layer - you do this by Apple(Mac) OR Ctrl(Windows) clicking on the white box with the T in it in your layer pallete. It should leave you with a marquee in the shape of your text..

Step 5
Now select the layer with the brush stroke texture on it, and click on the add mask button at the bottom of the layer pallete - leaving you with the texture in the shape of your letters:

Step 6
Now, clear the selection (CTRL/Apple D) and select the text layer. Apply a Stroke layer style to this layer - use a black line, centred about 2 pixels in width - NOTE: you wont see this line just yet (supposing you've followed the tutorial exactly).

Step 7
The next step is to select the Background and fill it with white, revealing our final effect. You should now rename your layers - something i probably should have done as we went along..

Step 8
Now we change the levels on the texture layer so that the sketch effect is more obvious. Image > Adjustments > Brightness + Contrast helps us here..

Step 9
Now set the blend mode of the Texture Layer to Darken.

Step 10
To roughen up the sketch effect a little, unlink the Mask from the Texture Layer (click on the Chain Link in between the mask and layer icons). Now, make sure you have the Mask selected (click on it's icon so it has an outline), now apply the SAME motion blur filter settings to the mask layer, this should allow the pencil marks to escape from the outline of the text.

The final step is to back the text layer off slightly - select the text layer and change it's opacity to 80% in the Layer Palette.
